Out Stealing Horses

Out Stealing Horses

Per Petterson

translated by Anne Born

I'm not going to write a book review here, I'm not that gifted a writer and probably won't do justice to this novel. Commuting by train gives me the opportunity to read between 20 and 30 books per year; some books are really good and others are simply crap (ex. Divisadero, by Michael Ondaatje, is utter crap. Good writing but an utterly frustrating read, don't waste your time).

The book 'Out Stealing Horses', upon first reading is by far one of the best books I've read in years. The novel is a beautiful melodic meditation weaving between the past and present in such a seamless and gorgeous way. I can not recommend this novel enough. GO READ!!

I'll possibly write a full review after I reread (Currently reading 'Someone Knows My Name' by Lawrence Hill).

1-12-08: Different Spokes Jersey Ride

Above: View towards the Golden Gate Bridge from the top of Conzelman.

So I finally rode a DSSF monthly Jersey Ride. I signed up as a member some months ago, but only did one DSSF ride in Mountain View and that consisted of a grand total of two riders, Chris and I. I figured, rather than driving to Mountain View and being tempted to go into work, I would get up this morning roll across the street and meet other DSSFers finally. Nine a.m, nearly sharp, we left Peet's, I was bit behind because I was waiting for my Garmin to locate the satellites, but caught up at the Bridge. The Jersey ride has three ride options of varying lengths and difficulty. Most do the intermediate, ~47 miler, Tiburon Loop. I chose to do the more difficult Conzelman/McCullough Road climbing in the Marin Headlands. All I can say is thankfully, Nancy (rider #1016) was my inspiration for the day. She kept me honest in that after the climb up Conzelman I wanted to cheat and go through the tunnel which would have avoided the climb up McCullough. I was afraid she was going to wait for my lazy ass at the top, so I went for it. I found it a fairly difficult ride for the stage of training I'm at, but it was a good one none the less.

Below: View North from Paradise road towards San Quentin Prison.

In-law???

Heartfelt congratulations going out to my younger brother Dan and his new fiance. I first met Jen, many, many, moons ago at my brother's graduation from Northwestern and didn't really get a chance to get know her more till this past summer at camp. All I can say is my brother is one lucky guy. I'm also jealous as hell of her; she seems to have that 'gay' decorating/fashion/...hell just damn ability to match gene, that I'm badly missing.
It will be a pleasure welcoming her to the family.
(I just wish our mother was still living to welcome her also)

Below: My brother Dan and Jen (Center) standing above our Dad (sitting) at camp.

Above: This picture, of Jen in the canoe, was taken just before the wind picked up and blew her to the center of Lake Annabessacook (Monmouth, Maine).
Below: My brother Dan to the rescue ;-)

PS. Also I want shout out to my cousin Molly. She's newly engaged too. I've been searching and searching for a pic of Eric and her, but those pics were from two or maybe three years ago and I've crashed two computers since then hence losing our old pics (I'm lousy at backing up). You can check out her blog, Incorporating and Ingesting the Being of One. They're currently living and working in Thailand. She got her Mom's traveling gene.

PSS. Jen blogs some at http://www.redbookmag.com/home/life/.

How to make an angel.

need a couple of inches of fresh untrampled snow...
some warm clothes...

proceed with horizontal jumping jacks...

get up before the cold sets in...

result = pretty angel.

just guess who's the bigger angel.
